Keiko Mizushima Keyes was born in Japan and studied at Sarah Lawrence College. After graduation, she married Roger Keyes, a dealer in prints and drawings, and worked with him in his business. She returned to Japan in 1966 to develop her skills as a conservator of works of art on paper. She was one of the first to apply Japanese conservation techniques to western art works.
